ANF proposes removal, rehabilitation of fishing piers

Times Observer file photo A 2022 inspection has prompted federal officials to recommend the removal of this fishing pier at Webbs Ferry. A similar pier at Elijah Run is recommended for rehabilitation.

Deferred maintenance is going to result in the rehabilitation of a fishing pier on the Allegheny Reservoir and the demolition of another.

Chris Lesser, the ANF’s public affairs officer, said that the piers at Webbs Ferry and Elijah Run were built in the 1990s.

“In 2022, structural issues were identified by engineers conducting routine inspections and both piers were closed,” he said. “The inspections found that both piers needed repairs to ensure continued public safety.

“The piers were further evaluated by a structural engineer who put together a repair plan for both structures.”

Both of the fishing piers are located near the respective boat launches.

At Webbs Ferry, Leeser explained that the pier “would require extensive reconstruction to address the safety issues identified….”

As a result, the recommendation is to remove that pier.

At Elijah Run, the need for maintenance is described as “moderate.”

“The Forest Service is proposing to repair the Elijah Run fishing pier during low water in late 2024 or early 2025,” Lesser said.

The proposal is currently open for public comments via email, mail or over the phone. The comment window is open through June 30.

Starting at $3.50/week.
