Sheffield man convicted on sex charges

A Sheffield man was convinced on child sexual assault charges in the wake of a trial held in Warren County earlier this month.

Lorn Champlin, 64, was found guilty of three counts each of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child and aggravated indecent assault as well as corruption of minors and unlawful contact with a minor for conduct that occurred in Feb. 2022.

All of these offenses are felony convictions.

A jury acquitted Champlin on charges of two counts of rape of a child, corruption of minors and unlawful contact with a minor.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 11 but online court records show that the Warren County Public Defender’s Office filed a motion for mistrial in the case that will be heard by Judge Gregory Hammond on May 24.

This marks just one of five pending dockets against Champlin, three of which are sexual in nature.

A trial was held back in February on one of those dockets that returned a not guilty verdict on a count of unlawful contact with minors but the jury was hung on charges of indecent assault and corruption of minors.

A hung jury occurs when a jury is unable to unanimously vote for a verdict of guilty or not guilty.

Hammond previously ruled that those charges could be tried again.

Three of the remaining dockets include sexual offenses ranging from rape to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse to aggravated indecent assault, among others.

The remaining docket includes 17 counts of possession of firearms prohibited.

Testimony at the preliminary hearing from last enforcement alleged that the firearms were discovered when Champlin was arrested on the sexual assault dockets.
