Youngsville Borough Council talks site of E. Main St. fire

Times Observer photo by Josh Cotton Youngsville Borough Council on Monday discussed this East Main Street property that was destroyed by fire in late January.

It’s been about six weeks since fire decimated a commercial building on East Main Street in Youngsville.

Youngsville Borough Council is looking for movement on cleaning up the rubble that was left behind.

Council discussed the property during Monday’s meeting.

Borough Manager Wendy Wilcox told council that the fire is “still under investigation” and that, in the wake of a discussion with the insurance company, it could be “60 days before anything is known.”

A bond in the wake of a fire is required by municipal ordinance but Wilcox said she is “not sure with the investigation if insurance money is going to be received.”

What, if anything, should the borough do?

“I wouldn’t touch it,” Councilman Eric Mineweaser said. “I just want to make sure the whole area down there is secure because it doesn’t look good right now. Warning tape is on the ground.

“At some point,” Councilman Troy Clawson added, “it’s going to have to be secured. We have to keep our borough safe,” he said.

Council discussed potential barrier options that could be implemented at the site.

RADIO DONATION

A radio issue highlighted in that Jan. fire resulted in a different type of borough action.

Police Chief Todd Mineweaser proposed – and borough council approved – donating old radios to the Garland VFD.

Garland VFD Chief Brian Bull said the county’s new radio system works like a cell phone, which means they can have limited service inside a structure.

“It’s been a problem we’ve known about,” Bull said.

The borough’s old radios, he said, would allow responders inside a structure outside to communicate with responders outside.

“These radios fit the bill,” he added.

Starting at $3.50/week.
