Cocaine charge, animal neglect lands Warren man in prison

A Warren man was sentenced to years in state prison for possessing over 1.75 pounds of cocaine as well as neglect of animals.

President Judge Maureen Skerda sentenced Gregory L. Berry, 35, on Friday morning.

“He does take responsibility,” Assistant Public Defender Francis Waweru said, telling the court that he was selling drugs to provide for his child.

“He has taken responsibility from the very outset,” he stressed.

The charges stemmed from a raid conducted by the Warren County Drug Task Force at a Dahl Street residence back in October.

The street value of what was seized was estimated in excess of $65,000 and the raid was the result of an eight-month-long investigation.

Investigators allege in the affidavit of probable cause that Berry was questioned and was “very forthcoming about all of the items located in the home stating that they were his.”

Animal cruelty charges were added in the wake of the arrest.

Three French Bulldogs were seized from the residence and investigators told the Times Observer that the dogs had been living in “deplorable conditions.” They were surrendered to the Paws Along The River Humane Society.

“I let my greed get the best of me,” Berry told the court on Friday. I should have been grateful for the job I had. I want to hold myself responsible.”

Skerda asked about the conditions of the dogs as well as whether he was using or selling the cocaine.

“At the end of the day,” Berry said, “I don’t want to make too many excuses.”

Calling it a “tremendous amount” of cocaine, Berry was sentenced to 60 to 120 months incarceration with credit for 169 days of time served on a count of possession with intent to deliver. He was also sentenced to approximately $5,500 in fines and fees, submission of a DNA sample, priority for drug and alcohol treatment and one year of reentry supervision.

Berry was also sentenced to five months to 10 months incarceration and $1,318.95 in restitution on a neglect of animals charge.
