“Our Positive Behavior Interventions and Support motto at Youngsville Elementary School is SOAR. SOAR stands for Safety, Ownership, and Always Respect,” Ronda Darling, health and physical education teacher at YES said.

Students in physical education classes are awarded up to three points each day for each of those categories.

“For “Safety” – students are expected to use equipment correctly and appropriately, wear sneakers, and follow the rules and procedures of the game/activity,” Darling said. “For “Ownership” – students are expected to participate fully, try their best, and accept the consequences of their behavior.

“For “Always Respect” – students are expected to listen while others speak, share equipment, take turns appropriately, and be kind to everyone.”

Darling said she tracks those points.

“The class that receives the highest percentage score for each grading period, will get an agreed upon incentive,” she said. “The class will also display “The Golden Sneaker” award within their classroom and be recognized for ‘SOARing’ during Physical Education classes and lessons.”

Mrs. Renninger’s kindergarten class was awarded the Golden Sneaker for the first marking period while Ms. Marcu’s fourth-graders took the Sneaker for the second nine-weeks.

“Overall integrating PBIS principles into physical education helps create a supportive and structured learning environment where students can develop not only physical skills but also important social, emotional, and behavioral competencies,” Darling said.
