Youngsville residents question Fairmont Hotel project

Youngsville Borough Council fielded questions on the former Fairmont Hotel and parking on Bates Street at its meeting Monday evening.

Resident Terry Chiaravallotti asked council if new owner of the property Nathaniel Weaver had ever given a structural report on the former hotel building to the council.

While Weaver has not, council members said they have been in talks with him regarding getting necessary evaluations and paperwork to obtain an occupancy permit. Council members also noted they are working toward getting an engineer chosen by the borough to examine the property.

Weaver attended the October council meeting to outline his plans for the property. At the time, he stated he had already been working to restore the site and his project manager said he believed the building to be structurally sound.

In response to council concerns at the time, he noted his intent is to repair a section of roof that has fallen in. He said he intends to remodel the building in period-appropriate style and furnish it accordingly. At that time, Weaver agreed to meet with the borough regarding the property at a later date.

Monday, council members noted the building will need significant work.

“He’s a long way from where he is going to need to be, ultimately,” Councilman Rick Brewster said.

Residents of Bates Street attended the meeting to ask that a two-hour parking limit on the street be removed. According to them, events at the high school limit resident parking and the limit is resulting in them receiving parking tickets.

Borough Manager Wendy Wilcox said the issue would be examined by the borough streets committee. She said she intends to schedule a meeting of the committee in early January.

Borough police Chief Todd Mineweaser noted he is aware of the issue.

“It’s definitely a problem for residents,” he said. “I’ve tried working with the school district as well.”
