Council joins with county, schools on tax appeal

The City of Warren has joined the county and Warren County School District in joint representation on a commercial property tax appeal.

City Solicitor Andrea Stapleford said the appeal was filed by Whirley Industries and includes three parcels located at 140 W. Harmar St.

She told council that the “appeals could result in a significant reduction of tax revenue” and potentially include the city being required to refund taxes already paid.

She added that the “expense of outside legal counsel is deemed to be appropriate.”

“We’re going through a reassessment in this county,” Councilman Maurice Cashman said. “The way this is going, I don’t know how reassessment is going to turn out.

Mayor David Wortman said that the city has entered into similar agreements with the same firm in the past.

Council also shifted a parking lease from the owner of the HIY building directly to Bent Run Brewing.

Online county assessment records show that the subject parcel is the middle of three city-owned parcels in front of the Clark Street Parking Garage.

Council also agreed to a three-year contract with the police union that will take effect Jan. 1.
