Assault charges from alleged shotgun discharge during dispute

A Sugar Grove man faces assault and threat charges stemming from an incident where he allegedly discharged a firearm to get people to leave his property.

William J. Burch, 35, 3921 Stillwater Road, was charged by Corry-based Pennsylvania State Police in the wake of the incident that allegedly occurred on Dec. 16 in Freehold Twp.

Troopers were dispatched just before 8:30 p.m. and met with two men at the Sugar Grove Kwik Fill.

They told troopers that they went to the Stillwater Road residence to speak to a woman. They alleged that when they arrived, the woman’s boyfriend, identified as Burch, “came onto the front porch in possession of a long gun-style firearm,” according to the affidavit of probable cause.

The woman spoke to the two men, who remained in their vehicle, while “Burch stayed on the porch still in possession of the said firearm,” the victims alleged.

The men told police that, as they were leaving, “they heard a loud noise consistent with a discharge of a firearm” and observed Burch “pointing the long gun firearm at their vehicle.”

Troopers went to the residence and spoke with Burch, who allegedly told them that he did come to the porch possessing an AR-12 shotgun “knowing of a bad history” between the individuals.

He then allegedly told police that he “did discharge one round into the air and told them to ‘get the (expletive) off my property.'”

Troopers subsequently charged Burch with two counts each of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and harassment.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 27.
