County eighth graders attend career day

It’s more than just a game.

Students from across the county converged on Holy Redeemer Parish in Warren to attend a career day with a twist.

In an effort to encourage students to make the most of the day, every student played a game. Students were required to collect four letters that spelled “LIFE.” To accomplish the task, students had to interact in a meaningful way with presenters, each of which had been assigned one of the letters to spell “LIFE.” Each career sector represented at the event was assigned a colored card with a corresponding letter: purple for health care, yellow for business and financial services, cyan for manufacturing and job skills and magenta for public service and government. Students needed one of each to collect a prize. The game was dubbed “The Game of Life.”

“In a few years you will be playing the game of life for real,” instructions provided to students said. “Take advantage of this activity to think about what you would like to do then.”

“The goal of this is to ask questions of employers,” Jenny Burroughs, school to work coordinator with Warren Forest Higher Education Council which organized the event, said

“There are a lot of interesting jobs,” student Aiden Snyder said.

Students Caleb Schafer and Grayson King pointed to a PennDOT simulator and welding tech instruction as highlights of the day.

Students attended in shifts organized by school throughout the nearly four hour event.

Twenty-three organizations attended.

“What this is all about is to educate students as to the careers available in Warren County,” Burroughs said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
