Voters who cast ballots by absentee will be receiving a new ballot in the coming days in the wake of the discovery of a typo.
Though, for several reasons, the issue isn't projected to have much of an impact on the election, which is now just two weeks away.
The county's Board of Elections said in a statement that 233 voters received absentee ballots "with an incorrect request to vote for 'no more than three commissioners.'"
The problem? Voters can only vote for two commissioners in a general election.
"This error affected only absentee ballots," the Board says. "No regular mail-in ballots were affected."
As a result, the county's Election Department will be sending new ballots – with the correct instructions – to everyone who received an absentee ballot.
"This error is unfortunate but should have a minimal effect," Commissioner Jeff Eggleston, who also serves on the Board of Elections. "The race for commissioner is currently unchallenged on the ballot as there are three candidates for three elected positions."
County staff ask affected voters to either mail their ballots back "using the provided Declaration Envelope" or return the ballot in person to the courthouse.
"Absentee ballot voters who cannot return the revised ballot but have already returned the original ballot will have their ballot counted as usual; however, if they voted for three candidates for Commissioner, their commissioner vote will not count," the Board's statement said. "All other votes will. Therefore, the Election Board urges absentee voters to turn in a revised ballot."
