Sheffield students rewarded for P.R.I.D.E.

Sheffield Area Elementary School students should be proud — so on Friday, the school held its first live P.R.I.D.E. event.

Fall varsity athletes at Sheffield Area Middle High School lined the entrance to the auditorium cheering elementary students and giving high fives as they entered the room. Cheerleaders performed for students and a drawing was held to determine winning elementary students.

P.R.I.D.E. stands for positivity, responsibility, integrity, determination and excellence. When elementary students at SAES show pride behaviors, they receive a ticket and P.R.I.D.E. sticker. Tickets are collected for a weekly drawing. The school counselor brings a to each classroom and draws a random winner

“At SAES, our students receive ‘tickets’ when they demonstrate P.R.I.D.E. behaviors,” Principal Kylie Harris said. “Students who receive a P.R.I.D.E. ticket at any point in the day are given a P.R.I.D.E. sticker to wear home and in the community for recognition.”

As part of homecoming activities, the school opted to bring all the students together for the week’s drawing for the first time.

P.R.I.D.E. is an example of a positive behavior interventions and supports program at the school, Principal Kylie Harris said.

“PBIS is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health,” according to PBIS org. “When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also improves teacher health and wellbeing. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable, and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
