Johnny Appleseed is back in town.

This weekend, from Friday afternoon until Sunday, the Johnny Appleseed Festival is returning to Sheffield.

Starting at noon Friday the festival will feature food, activities and entertainment for the whole family, including the highlight of the event, the lumberjack and lumberjill competitions.

On Friday, food vendors will open at noon with an opening ceremony at 1 p.m. Registration for the annual cornhole tournament will run until 4:45 p.m. and the competition begins at 5 p.m. The Kids Sawdust Pile and Fun Zone also opens at 5 p.m.

At 6 p.m., the highlight of the event begins. Professional competitors from across North America will gather to compete in seven events in the lumberjack and lumberjill competitions. Events are divided between male and female competitors and feature competitions in underhand, standing block and springboard chops; crosscut sawing; one man buck; axe throwing and hot saw.

Underhand chop consists of a competitor standing on top of a horizontally positioned block and striking first one side then the other of the block until it is cut through. Standing block chop consists of competitors securing a block to an upright support and striking first one side and then the other of a block until it is severed. Springboard chop consists of competitors climbing a nine-foot tall spar pole using their axe and a hardwood plank then cutting most of the way through the front of a block before turning and cutting the rest of the way through from the other side. Crosscut sawing consists of a team of two competitors cutting through a horizontally fastened block. One man buck is the same, except one competitor operates the two-man saw by themself. Axe throwing is conducted from 20 feet out with a four-inch bullseye and points are awarded based on how close to the bullseye axes land. Hot saw consists of competitors resting their hands on a block with a chainsaw at their feet. At the signal, competitors reach down, start the saw and make three cuts through the block as quickly as they can.

According to the event website, the festival has become “one of the premier stops on the professional lumberjack circuit.”

Lumberjack and lumberjill events continue throughout the weekend, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday will feature a horse pull at 11 a.m. and Sunday will feature a tractor pull, also at 11 a.m.

The annual apple pie baking contest is on Saturday, with registration from 12:30 until 2:30 p.m. and judging at 3 p.m.

Saturday will also feature the luminaries event at 7 p.m. followed by fireworks.

The wine trail, to be held at the firehall, will run from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. and feature wares from Bear Creek Winery, The Winery at Wilcox, Sugar Bush Winery and Happy Hour Winery.

Live music will be featured throughout Saturday and Sunday.
