Boilermakers will gather to commemorate Gateway Arch

It’s been 58 years since the Gateway Arch in St. Louis – fabricated by Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Company (PDM) in Warren – was completed.

An event set for next week aims to bring boilermakers together in honor of that anniversary.

It’s called Arch Builders’ Day and it will be held at the Baby Arch at the Warren County Visitors Bureau in Starbrick on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Ed Atwood said that Local 659 present and past boilermakers are invited to attend.

The event is put on by the Committee of Retired Boilermakers.

Atwood said that a ceremony will start at the Arch at 10 a.m. and that attendees are asked to “share your memories of Boilermaker work in Local 659 (and the) Warren, Pa. area.”

The event has become an annual tradition.

The stainless-steel exterior of the arch was constructed at Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Company (PDM) in Warren by local boilermakers and opened in 1965.

McDonald Construction Company of St. Louis won the bid for the construction and sub-contracted the exterior construction to PDM.

Project leaders checked other PDM facilities before deciding on Warren.

PDM workers went to St. Louis for reunion events in 2012, 2015 and 2018. Atwood previously told the Times Observer that the reunions provide a way for Warren’s PDM boilermakers to meet and connect with others who worked on the arch.
