PFBC to stock fish for fall starting next week
Fall means more than leaves, cool temperatures and pumpkin spice to some.
To the angling community, it means the return of good trout fishing conditions.
And the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission will start stocking some waterways in the state next week to augment those opportunities.
The Commission said Thursday that 117,500 hatchery-raised rainbow, brown and book trout will be stocked in 119 stream sections and lakes.
“These stockings will immediately replenish some of the most popular fishing spots across the Commonwealth and provide ice fishing opportunities as conditions allow throughout the winter,” the Commission said in a statement.
The sole stocking in Warren County will target those ice fishing opportunities – Chapman Reservoir will be stocked with brown and rainbow trout on Dec. 11.
Regionally, two of the best options include Kinzua Creek in McKean County and Oil Creek in Venango County.
Kinzua will be stocked on Oct. 4 while Oil Creek through the southern portion of Oil Creek State Park will be stocked Oct. 2.
“Anglers who spend time on the water during the fall season, especially, are surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery and comfortable temperatures of the year,” Robert Brown, PFBC Deputy Director of Field Operations said.
“The enjoyment of fishing on a stream or lake in fall and winter can be even more enjoyable when you plan your adventure around stocked trout fishing opportunities. The chance to catch stocked trout complements the world-class wild trout fisheries that also come alive around the same time the leaves start changing colors.”
The majority of those fish – nearly 88,000 – will be stocked in October in 53 lakes and 40 stream sections. Nearly 30,000 will follow in lakes in Nov. and Dec.
Regulations allow anglers to fish for trout that are stocked in the fall and winter immediately, keeping a maximum of three, all at least seven inches long.
