Young lady wins Crime Stoppers’ Steer Dump
Photo submitted to the Times Observer Maren Cathcart, in the red dress standing next to Sheriff Brian Zeybel, was, along with her family, the grand prize winner from the Steer Dump held last week at the Warren County Fair. The family and Zeybel are joined in the photo by Crime Stoppers President Gary Barnes.
A young lady is considerably richer in the wake of the Steer Dump held last week at the Warren County Fair.
Maren Cathcart was the winner of this year’s dump, which serves as a fundraiser for Warren County Crime Stoppers.
If you’re not familiar, the Steer Dump can accurately be described as cow patty bingo. The show ring will be divided into small squares — this year by GPS — and a cow will be brought in. From there, everyone waits for the money-winning movement.
Cathcart and her family took home the grand prize from the event, which Crime Stoppers brought back this year after a hiatus. In addition to the $1,000 prize, a series of smaller prizes were awarded, according to Crime Stoppers President Gary Barnes. That includes $100 to Jess Sleeman, Guy Baughman, Brenda Walters and Peg Stino; $50 each to Megan Grady, CJ Cross, Ashley Brindage and Ed Burris as well as $25 gas cards to Carolin Bower, Marty Hahn, Lisa Eckman and Mark Papalia.
“They can pick up the winnings at the Sheriff’s Office in Warren,” Barnes said.
The event is the sole fundraiser for Crime Stoppers, which assists law enforcement by providing both a tip line and rewards for information leading to arrests in certain cases. Most notably that included a $2,000 award to the couple who spotted Michael Burham.
Crime Stoppers has been sponsoring the event since at least the early 1990s. Barns also wanted to thank the businesses that supported the effort by selling tickets including The Plaza, Bent Run, Bella Capelli, Jones Chevy and Ekey’s as well as United Refining that donated the gas card prizes.
