Teacher gets probation for sexually assaulting student

A former Warren County School District teacher has been sentenced to probation for sexually assaulting a high school student.

Rachel E. Lasecki, 27, Erie, was sentenced Friday by Judge Gregory Hammond at the Warren County Courthouse.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, police said they scheduled a forensic interview with the victim at the Warren County Children’s Advocacy Center based on a report of suspected abuse that “stated concerns over possible grooming behaviors.”

According to the affidavit, Lasecki made alcohol and marijuana available to a student and “exposed (the victim) to sexually explicit material via the internet on more than one occasion.”

Lasecki allegedly touched the victim inappropriately while in Lasecki’s car at a remote location in Warren County, according to the affidavit. At the time, Lasecki was a teacher at Warren Area Elementary Center as well as an assistant volleyball coach at Warren Area High School.

Her attorney, Elizabeth Feronti, said the prosecution previously had no objection to a period of probation and said that would be “certainly appropriate” in this matter.

Assistant District Attorney Casey Strickland said that Lasecki’s conduct “crossed” several lines. Strickland said that Lasecki was able to “ingratiate” herself into the private life of the victim via her vulnerabilities.

She credited the victim for being “extremely strong” and showing “maturity and compassion” through the process.

Lasecki, Strickland said, “had a choice to do what she did. The victim did not.”

Lasecki declined to comment when given the opportunity to do so.

Hammond said an evaluation by the Sexual Offenders Assessment Board did not find Lasecki to be a sexually violent predator but did determine that Lasecki’s conduct was predatory in nature.

Speaking directly to the victim, Hammond said that she bears no responsibility for what happened to her. “You’re 100 percent the victim,” he said. “The fact you believe the community turned against you… is heartbreaking” and explains why victims at times don’t come forward.

Turning to Lasecki, Hammond said he reviewed 30 letters submitted on her behalf and believes that the letters speaking to her character were truthful. “The victim most likely thought about you the same way,” he said, before the conduct occurred.

“There’s no such thing as minor sexual offending,” he said, but said he believes she is not likely to reoffend.

Hammond sentenced Lasecki on a count of indecent assault to two years probation, $500 in fines and fees, $2.955.77 in restitution, a no contact/no communication order, submission of a DNA sample, sexual offender counseling and to undergo mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations and comply with the recommendations. The sentence also included the term of registration as a sexual offender, 50 hours of community service and a provision that she is not permitted to be employed or volunteer in a capacity with minors.

A count of corruption of minors brought an additional two years probation and 25 hours of community service.

Starting at $3.50/week.
