17th YMCA Tango Race once again a ‘special event’

Another Tango is in the books.

The 17th Warren County YMCA Tango Adventure Race was held Saturday and, according to longtime participant and team sponsor Bruce Kern, it did not disappoint.

“He (YMCA CEO Thad Turner) has developed a special event. Thad has a terrific team he’s built around him… the YMCA staff and volunteers,” Kern, owner of C.A. Curtze Co. and regular event participant, said, “It’s unique. There’s nothing else like it.”

He cited the wide range of activities through legs of the event and the scenic setting as features you don’t find anywhere else.

The event featured a 13.1-mile run along the Allegheny River toward Kinzua Beach, followed by a 10.6-mile bicycle course, a 2.2-mile swimming leg, a more than 6 mile orienteering course, a 4-mile speed run from Kinzua Beach to the Kinzua Dam, and a final 8-mile paddle to Point Park where an after race awards ceremony and celebration was held.

“How many races have anything like it?” Kern asked. “An event like this should attract teams from a hundred miles around.”

Kern noted his company has sponsored teams in various years since 2009 and this year marks the eighth time its had an entrant. For Saturday’s race, the company had two, six-person teams and Kern competed in the solo event, a feat he’s accomplished in years past as well.

“It’s such a great team-building event,” he said. “It’s a great way to have people working together to achieve a goal.”

The company’s participation has grown over the years, starting with just a three-person relay team.

“We always had the Tango on our radar,” Kern said. “Word kind of got around.”

He warned the event isn’t a walk in the park. “You’ve got Thad Turner, a Navy SEAL, who has designed this,” Kern said. “It’s very challenging, yet achievable for those who have put in the work and trained properly.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
