Warren roundabout project enters next stage

Times Observer photo by Josh Cotton Stage three of construction of the roundabout at Market St. and Pennsylvania Ave. starts today. In addition to eastbound traffic, motorists on Pennsylvania Ave. coming from the north on Market St. will now be able to head west on Pennsylvania Ave.

Work on the roundabout at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Market Street is expected to move to stage three starting today.

That results in fewer traffic restrictions in downtown Warren.

PennDOT said in a statement that the roundabout will continue to be open for eastbound traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue as well as westbound traffic coming from Market Street.

All westbound traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue and Market Street traffic northbound will be unable to use the intersection in this next stage.

Northbound traffic on Market Street will be detoured on Pennsylvania Avenue to the Glade Bridge and then US Route 6 to Ludlow Street and then Laurel Street to Fourth Avenue.

Westbound traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue will be detoured over the Glade Bridge and US 6 to Ludlow Street as well.

“The intersection will be closed to all truck traffic,” the Pennsylvania Department of. Transportation said in a statement. “Trucks and other large vehicles must follow the posted detour and will not be able to turn or turnaround in the work area.”

PennDOT insists that access to all businesses in the affected area will be maintained.

“Stage 3 is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete,” PennDOT said. “In Stage 4 of the project, the roundabout will be open to all traffic with flaggers and short-term lane restrictions as needed.”

A public education session for drivers looking to learn how to navigate the roundabout is also set for today at the Allegheny Community Center from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

“The program, which is open to all drivers, will include tips on using the improved intersection and general information about safely navigating roundabouts,” PennDOT said.

In addition to the roundabout, the project includes sidewalks, crosswalks, truck aprons and updated lighting and drainage.

Starting at $3.50/week.
