Ten scouts and two adults will represent the Chief Cornplanter Council at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean, West Virginia at the quadrennial gathering, or jamboree, of the nation’s Scouts.
The event started last Wednesday and runs through this Friday.
Those attending from Chief Cornplanter include Xavier Pantoja, Andrew Hoden, Chris Joblon, CJ Mix, Carsyn Branstrom, Mike Carnahan, Jr., Jacob Ziolkowski, Dylan Johnson, Matt DeSimone and Kyler Carlson along with leaders Mike Carnahan Sr. and Judi Hukill.
According to the Boy Scouts of America, the first jamboree was scheduled for 1935 in Washington, D.C. to celebrate the 25th anniversary of scouting but was pushed back two years due to a polio outbreak.
That first jamboree drew 25,000 scouts who camped around the Washington Monument and Tidal Basin, per the BSA.
This year’s version will bring 10 days of adventure including stadium shows, pioneer village, Mount Jack hikes and adventure sports among others.
The scene — the Summit — is a scout adventure center developed earlier in the 2000s as both a permanent site for the National Scout Jamboree and an additional high adventure base for scouts.
This week marks the first National Jamboree since 2017 when over 30,000 gathered in West Virginia.
The 2021 edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
