TCCS students participate in bike camp

School’s out for the summer.

But 30 Tidioute Community Charter School students went back to school earlier this month.

The curriculum? Bicycling.

Kelly MacDonald, the school’s mental health therapist, organized a three-day summer camp for the students from July 11-13.

She said the goal was “to help students learn about the joys and responsibilities of owning and riding a bicycle.

Students learned about safety equipment, rules and laws of the road, how to clean and maintain a bike and more exciting things like bicycle handling and BMX racing.

Titusville Bicycle Police Officer Ben Stone and BMX racer Christopher MacDonald helped run the camp.

“The students also earned their bicycle license complete with their own picture, received a cleaning cloth to maintain their bikes, created a craft and played bicycle themed games,” she said.

“Seeing all our families work to get their kids equipment to school to make this camp successful was outstanding,” she added. “Every student rode a bike over the 3 days which is a core memory each student will carry through their school career.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
