Police thank community for snacks that have been ‘great for morale’
Troopers Schick and Bingman are pictured with some of the donations received by Pennsylvania State Police from area residents.
Sometimes, snacks are more than snacks.
Community members and businesses have been dropping off various food items, drinks and treats at the Youngsville Fire Hall for the officers pouring across the county in the search for Michael Burham.
Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said items started coming in once the command post settled in at the fire hall.
“There had been a few people stop in at the barracks but I think people feel a little more at ease to stop by the fire department,” he said. “We genuinely appreciate it.”
It wasn’t something that the police asked for.
But the community did it anyway.
That support has included bottled water, snacks, energy drinks, granola bars, pizza and subs.
“We had another local business that brought over an ice cream cake and a bunch of dishes of ice cream for our folks,” Bivens said. “One of the big contingents had just come back in from probably six hours of humping up and down the mountains and through the woods. It was a nice treat for them.”
Bivens said that they take “good care of our people” but the ice cream was still “a very nice treat.
“It’s great for morale and it’s great for them to see the support of the community.”
Bivens said they’re trying to be “as unobtrusive as we possibly can in the community” but that has to be balanced with the need to capture Burham.
“But at the same time, we recognize people, you know, they’re on edge,” he said. “They worry about the safety of the families and their children.”
Some of the people dropping off supplies have conveyed that message, that they want this to be over.
“But they follow it up with ‘we want you all to be safe,'” he said.
Bivens called it “very, very kind” for the community to contribute in these ways. “It’s appreciated.
“Most of all, the support is appreciated.”
