Crime Stoppers to present reward for Burham capture

Times Observer file photo Law enforcement are pictured during the nine-day search for Michael Burham after his escape from Warren County Jail on July 6.

The couple whose tip resulted in the apprehension of jail escapee Michael Burham will receive a reward from Warren County Crime Stoppers.

District Attorney Rob Greene said a $2,000 reward will be presented today to Ron and Cindy Ecklund. Greene said in a statement that he would provide an update on the investigation into the escape as well.

Burham was detained Saturday on a federal warrant and taken to the Erie County Prison. Online court records do not indicate that preliminary hearing dates have been set on the escape charge as well as on the underlying kidnapping charges for which Burham was initially in the county jail.

First Assistant District Attorney Cody Brown said he had “no update for you at this time” on those issues.

City of Warren Mayor David Wortman addressed the escape and manhunt at the outset of Monday’s Warren City Council meeting.

“Walking through the operations center under the Command of Chief Sproveri and Captain Dougherty on that first morning I was amazed at the law enforcement agencies and the capabilities that were already in place,” he said. “All these entities were working with professionalism and urgency to capture Burham. I’m convinced that this fast response was essential to limiting his ability to maneuver freely and ultimately led to his capture.”

Wortman specifically credited the Pennsylvania State Police under the leadership of Lt. Col. George Bivens.

“The “Task Force” and capabilities you continued to build were invaluable,” he said. “Our community and region are sincerely grateful.”

Wortman credited the local residents for maintaining their guard and doing what law enforcement asked.

“To the residents of Warren, our County and region, you were remarkable in your calm and determined vigilance and support of our law enforcement agencies,” he said. “This may not have ended as swiftly and safely as it did without your involvement and the tips provided. As you know, ultimately that is what led to his capture, great work!”
