Youngsville Police bike rodeo program held

The Bike Rodeo program of Youngsville Borough Police Department serves multiple purposes.

Youngsters get some safety tips and a chance to test and improve their skills in a controlled environment.

Police register bicycles that will help in any case where a bike is stolen.

And, police and youth interact in a positive way.

There were about 20 kids at the most recent rodeo.

Officers presented a safety talk and gave each participant a packet of bicycle safety materials from State Sen. Scott Hutchinson’s office.

Lunch, paid for through community donations, included hot dogs, chips, cookies, and drinks.

Officer Ben Leach set up three different courses at Youngsville Volunteer Fire Department.

Bicyclists had to ride in a circle, ride through a down-and-back obstacle course, and practice adjusting speeds.

As a culminating activity, police used a speed timing device on a cruiser to measure how fast the kids were riding.

“They loved it and it was fun to watch,” Chief Todd Mineweaser said.

Each cyclist could take two attempts at the speed test.

If they went faster on the second, they earned an extra ticket toward the prizes.

The prizes were donated by Walmart and included a bike and three helmets.

Victor Fugate, Cole Maynor, and Ruby Rodriguez won the helmets and Beck Hollis won the bike.

Starting at $3.50/week.
