Water quality monitoring workshop is Wednesday

There will be a free, public water quality monitoring workshop on Wednesday.

The Conewango Creek Watershed Association is looking for volunteers to help assess local water quality.

The monthly monitoring is a cooperative effort of the CCWA and the Dickinson College Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM) and is funded by the Consortium for Scientific Assistance to Watersheds.

“The goal of the CCWA Monitoring Program is to collect data on local streams to help inform baseline health and progress on restoration efforts,” CCWA’s Liz Dropp said. “On June 7, 2023, CCWA and ALLARM will host a community event aimed at informing local volunteers about the program, expectations, and how to collect and analyze water samples from priority Warren County creeks and streams.”

“Conewango Creek Watershed Association Water Quality Monitoring Program provides opportunities for volunteer teams to learn about stream science and water quality health,” Dropp said. “On a monthly basis, volunteers will collect samples from tributaries in Warren County and test the water for the following indicators: temperature, pH, nitrate-nitrogen, stage, water clarity, and conductivity. Additionally, the Volunteer Monitors will look at biological indicators and macroinvertebrates annually to complement the monthly data collection.”

“This is aimed at educating any interested person about the program and volunteer efforts to monitor water quality locally,” Dropp said. “There is no commitment implied by attending this meeting. The information session is free and open to the public, but registration is required.”

The registration deadline is Tuesday and can be completed by visiting https://bit.ly/ccwamonitoring

The workshop will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Warren County Conservation District, 4000 Conewango Ave., Warren.

“After the volunteers have committed to the monthly monitoring program and equipment has been placed in their possession, ALLARM will be hosting a free video conference training workshop at a later date during the summer,” Dropp said.
