Students at Tidioute Community Charter School, the Reach and Teach program, and musician Adam Calvert teamed up to bring a high-energy concert to the school on Thursday.

Months ago, students in Megan Minich’s Computer Science Class received approval for a Reach and Teach concert at the school.

Since then, they have been making all the necessary arrangements.

“The kids did everything,” Minich said.

Students divided up numerous tasks and titles – from set-up to marketing, podcast to guest management.

“We’ve been assigning people roles,” Maddox Gilson said.

“I’ve been doing a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff,” Gilson, officially a member of the podcast crew, said. “Earlier this week, I arranged all the parking.”

On Thursday, it was show time.

“Today, I’ve been able to relax and enjoy what we’ve built,” he said minutes before the concert.

“I’m here to make sure the guests are all right with where they’re sitting, I’ll help them get pictures with Adam and get merchandise,” Director of Fan Experience Drake Bailey said.

“We’ve been building this up for months,” Bailey said. “It’s nice to look and see everything we’ve done and admire what we’ve worked for.”

Being part of the crew had advantages. “We all got to meet Adam, have lunch with him,” Bailey said. “It was great.”

Hailey Paden and Bryce Gilson were assigned backup singer roles for one song.

Other students in the audience didn’t know they were going to be on stage. During one song, Calvert pulled Ethan Stevens and Emerson Schantz onto the stage as backups.

“It was awesome,” Schantz said. “I loved it. It was the best ever.”

During the show, Calvert gave away a guitar provided by Reach and Teach and designed by the TCCS students.

The winner, teacher Daniel Glazebrook, passed it on to student Cory Mahaney.

Calvert performed a variety of music – country favorites and original songs, popular dance songs, even Footloose and Your Love.

He interacted with the students. In addition to having students and staff on stage, many times he got close to the front of the stage and accepted cell phones from students to take selfies as he sang.

Calvert and his band – Damon Mitchell on guitar, Jose Garrido on bass, and Caleb Gossage on drums – stayed long after the last song for photos and autographs.

“It was amazing,” Podcast Crew Member Jacob McDonald said. “We put in so much hard work and so much positivity came out of it.”

“My students knocked it out of the park,” Minich said. “The students had a blast and Adam agreed to come back next year.”
