Event to aid in replacement of illegible license plates

Motorists in Pennsylvania can get hit with a $100 fine for driving with an illegible license plate.

But the state will replace illegible plates at no cost.

And an event coordinated by State Senator Scott Hutchinson’s office later this month will facilitate that process.

The event is set for Monday, June 12 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., according to Mary Kushner, Hutchinson’s field representative. The event will be held at the Warren County Visitors Bureau facility in Starbrick, where Hutchinson’s field office is located.

Kushner said there’s no cost and no pre-registration is required.

“The plate and registration card will be mailed within a month,” she said. “A personalized plate is processed within 6-8 weeks.”

According to information from PennDOT, a plate is considered illegible “when one or more numbers or letters cannot be recognized from 50 feet or if the registration plate shows any blistering, peeling, discoloration or loss of reflectivity.”

State law allows PennDOT to replace the plate on request from the vehicle owner when a PennDOT representative or law enforcement determines it is illegible.

Kushner said that Conewango Police, Youngsville Police and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, who will also open the office for gun permits that evening, will be participating in the event on the 12th.

She explained there was no specific incident that brought this event about.

“We are here to assist constituents,” she said. “You may notice the number of peeling plates. A readable plate is necessary for EZ passes. An illegible plate is a violation of the Pa. Vehicle Code, which may result in a $100 fine.”

“Simply bring your current registration card and the vehicle that has the illegible plate to our office, and we will help you complete the form and send it to PennDOT for processing,” Hutchinson said in a newsletter to constituents.
