Students got a real-world project to work on.

Youngsville Borough saved some money.

And the Youngsville Borough Police department received equipment that improve its safety capabilities.

Students in the Warren County Career Center welding and auto collision shops recently made a bullet trap for Youngsville Borough Police.

“This is probably the third or fourth year they’ve helped us out and made something for us,” Chief Todd Mineweaser said. “It gives the kids something to work on and it saves us some money.”

“I talk to (welding teacher) Nate (McNett), give them a project, and let them run with it,” Mineweaser said.

“They approached us and wanted us to build this to increase safety for everyone in the municipal building,” McNett said.

Welding students C.J. Wyman and Evan Swanson and auto collision students Orion Geroux and Aubree Ski-Edwards prepared the bullet trap for the department.

The angled metal tube is designed as a clearing station to capture any discharge while weapons are being emptied at the end of a shift. Having such a trap is part of the department’s policy.

United Refining donated dry chemical used in fire extinguishers “to ensure there will never be a fire” in the trap, McNett said.

The project was a win-win for the students.

“Our students are serving the community and using the welding processes that we do on a daily basis,” he said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
