ANF centennial hiking challenge underway

The U.S. Forest Service in partnership with the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau is holding a hiking challenge to commemorate the centennial of the Allegheny National Forest.

“Come join us in celebrating 100 years of growth and adventure in Allegheny National Forest by hiking 100 miles,” the ANF said in a Facebook post. “The Centennial Hiking Challenge will take you through over 100 miles of the best and most beautiful trails we have to offer.

“Whether you want to take a peaceful nature walk, or trek through virtually untouched wilderness, our trails have something unique to offer to hikers of all skill levels.”

A hiking log is available on the ANF website.

Hikers are encouraged to choose from a series of trail segments posted to the website.

In Warren County, that includes much of the Trails at Jakes Rocks, Hickory Creek, the loops at Hearts Content, the Tanbark Trail and the Penny Run trail at Chapman Dam State Park.

The North Country trail also cuts through Warren County.

Those who log the 100 miles can then take the log to any ANF office — Warren, Marienville or the Bradford Ranger Station on Rt. 59 – or to the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau in Bradford. While supplies last, those who complete the challenge will receive an ANF-themed mug and coaster.

Participants are also asked to post about the challenge on Facebook — and tag @AlleghenyNF — for the chance to be highlighted.

The challenge will run through Sept. 24, 2024.
