Mail-in ballot returns lagging as election day arrives

Today is Primary Election Day.

It’s also the last day to get a mail-in ballot to the county election office.

And there’s been a dip in the percentage of ballots returned as Election Day approaches.

Warren County Elections Director Krystle Ransom said that 56 percent of ballots had been returned as of Friday afternoon. That’s 687 ballots out of 1,541 requested.

The last municipal election saw a 64 percent return rate, she explained.

The deadline to return a mail-in ballot is 8 p.m. on election night.

“We cannot accept ballots after 8 p.m. on election day and postmarked ballots will not apply,” Ransom said.

There is a path for voters who requested a mail-in ballot – but who haven’t returned it — to still vote in person on Tuesday.

“If a voter doesn’t turn it into the election office they may take their ballot to the polls to surrender it and vote at the polling location,” Ransom said.
