Council approves $500k paving project in Warren
Nineteen city blocks will be repaved this summer as part of a contract approved by Warren City Council on Monday.
Council awarded the contract to IA Construction totaling $530,170.45.
City Manager MIke Holtz said that is split into a base bid of approximately $370,000 and then another $159,000 in optional work, leaving the city some latitude on the size of the project.
The funding for the project is a combination from the city’s general fund and its state liquid fuels allocation. Council kicked in an additional $70,000 in general fund and liquid fuels dollars over what was budgeted to complete the entire project.
Mayor Dave Wortman noted if the optional work wasn’t completed it “would get rolled over to the next year,” leaving the city to be “basically playing catch up.”
Holtz said the city typically aims to repave 20 to 25 blocks each year but said that some of the blocks on the list this year are 600 to 700 feet long, substantially longer than the typical block which is around 450 feet.
Here’s a look at the work approved Monday by block: Carver St. from Lexington Ave. to the railroad tracks; Connecticut Ave. from Conewango Ave. to Edgewood Pl.; Falconer St. from Sill St. to Hall St.; Hall St. from Eddy St. to the dead end; Madison Ave. from Parker St. to Grant St.; Monroe St. from Conewango Ave. to the city line; West St. from Alexander St. to Kenmore St.; Willoughby Ave. from Conewango Ave. to Edgewood Pl.; W. Fifth Ave. from the bridge to Market St.; Hill St. from Glade St. to Monroe St. and Malvina St. from Park Ave. to Madison Ave.
The stretch of Carver St. hasn’t been paved since 1989. The W. Fifth Ave. blocks are the most recent, last repaved in 2014.
Work will be undertaken later this summer. The city aims to have the paving project completed each year by the start of school.
