Salvation Army to offer summer childcare program

Summertime can pose childcare problems for working parents.

The Salvation Army has a program aimed to help.

The Cobham Summer Day Camp will run for eight weeks — June 12 through Aug. 4.

“For parents of school-aged children whose childcare operates on a school year schedule, summertime presents a unique childcare challenge,” Major Dorothy Budd said. “To keep their kids busy and safe during the summer months, parents rely on camps and summer childcare providers.

“According to the American Camp Association, every year, about 26 million U.S. children attend summer camp. That’s over half of the population of children under 12.”

She explained that the Salvation Army’s offering is developed specifically “with times that help working families” and “depend on (the) needs of (a) family. We have an early time and later hours. Normal hours are 8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.”

Kids participating in the program will go swimming three days a week with a trip like roller skating or the movies every week.

“It is a jam-packed eight weeks,” Budd said.

Cost is $145 per week plus a $20 deposit.

“There are limited spots available, and you have the option to sign up for the number of weeks you would like,” Budd said.

She said that additional information can be found on the local Salvation Army’s Facebook page or by calling Jamie Stright at The Salvation Army at (814) 723-8950.

Starting at $3.50/week.
