Injuries reported in fire that destroys Pittsfield property

Times Observer photo by Brian Ferry At least one person was reportedly transported for treatment of injuries sustain in a Monday afternoon fire at 355-357 Main St., Pittsfield.
Fire struck a Main Street, Pittsfield, residence Monday afternoon.
The fire broke out at 355-357 Main Street at about 12:47 p.m.
There were injuries reported with the fire and at least one patient was transported for treatment.
Owner Nathan Weaver said he heard a gas spill was the cause of the fire at the two-apartment property.
Some residents were at home at the time the fire broke out, according to Weaver.
The neighboring building — a laundromat and attached apartment — was evacuated, he said.
“It’s really unfortunate… a tragedy,” Weaver said. “My heart goes out to all the people that were in there.”
The structure was not always a duplex, Weaver said. It was once the Pittsfield Post Office. Since then, it has also been the location of a hair salon.
The loss of the historic structure is a sad one, “but I feel more bad for my tenants,” Weaver said. “Buildings are replaceable.”
Garland Volunteer Fire Department was the lead agency at the scene. Also seen at the scene were firefighters and equipment from Wrightsville, Youngsville, Starbrick, and Pleasant volunteer fire departments.
Route 27 through Pittsfield was shut down between Route 6 and Davey Hill Road.
Crews were still on the scene at 4 p.m.
