Columbus man charged after scuffle with trooper

A Warren County man was taken to jail Saturday after he allegedly grabbed a police officer by the throat.

George L. Moyer, 48, of Columbus, is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment, and resisting arrest.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Corry-based state police were called to the scene of an incident at 6:05 p.m. Saturday, in Columbus. Police said they were speaking with Moyer about the alleged incident and “attempting to de-escalate and gather information,” according to the affidavit.

“Moyer was visibly agitated and clenching his fists… and yelling in (the trooper’s) face in close proximity,” police said. “Moyer refused to provide any information” and walked toward the alleged victim of the incident.

The trooper attempted to detain Moyer, according to the affidavit, to provide safety for the alleged victim and the officer, and grabbed his wrist.

“Moyer turned (toward the trooper) and grabbed him by the throat, using his left hand and applying pressure,” according to the affidavit.

The trooper removed Moyer’s hand and tried to place him on the ground and into handcuffs, according to the affidavit. “A struggle ensued for approximately one to two minutes before (the trooper) was able to secure Moyer in handcuffs.”

Moyer was arraigned Sunday before District Justice Raymond Zydonik and taken to Warren County jail after failing to post $50,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 29.

Starting at $4.00/week.
