Youngsville Borough has been hacked.
At Monday's meeting of Borough Council, Youngsville Heart and Soul Coordinator Barbara Young, who offered to create a new website for the borough at a previous meeting, informed the council members that the current website is having troubles.
"It will send visitors to a betting site in Argentina … or Canada," Young said. "There are a lot of issues with the current website as it is now. It needs to be cleaned … or just go away."
The borough is one year into a five-year contract for its website. The provider is willing to upgrade for an additional $149 per year - more than the annual amount of the original hosting contract.
"We've been researching different web builders and email providers," Borough Manager Wendy Wilcox said. "We would like to move both our website and our email."
She said GreenGeeks web hosting would provide the borough a secure website for $191.40 per year.
"I say we scrap it," Council Member Rick Brewster said. He asked if there were any good reasons to continue with it "other than we've paid for it."
Hearing none, the members voted unanimously to scrap the current website - Wilcox said she had attempted unsuccessfully to work out a discount or refund with the provider - while keeping the current borough email addresses active.
The email system will not be fully switched over until the end of the five-year contract.
Young said she could have a basic website prepared within 16 to 20 hours of the new system being in place and a "fully active" website within two weeks.
