Students, businesses combine to support Beaty fifth-grader

Students at Beaty-Warren Middle School are helping one of their own.

“Beaty is doing a fundraiser for a student in fifth grade,” teacher Wendy Carrington said in a letter to local businesses. “His name is Carson Kiser, and just before Christmas, he was diagnosed with leukemia. He has been in the Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital since his diagnosis. His father is staying there with him, and his three siblings are being cared for here in Warren.”

Students can bring in donations. They can buy shirts that show their support and return profits.

But, students generally have financial limits.

“Our students love to help, but we know that they have a limited amount of money and that, ultimately, it is their parents’ money and decision,” Carrington said. “To give the students a chance to donate from themselves, we set up a business match program.”

Through the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention Support program, students can earn FIRE Points with positive behaviors.

Over the school year, students may turn in those points for different prizes.

The newest prize is a donation to Carson.

Five points is worth a $1 donation.

Through the business match program, local businesses have offered to match the donations made by students.

“We have had such a great response and our point totals are matching so far to our donors,” Carrington said. “If we get more points, though, we may need to reach out to more business sponsors.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
