Weather system forecast to bring ice, snow to the Warren County
Warren County will be under a winter weather advisory today that is forecast to bring both snow and significant ice to the county.
According to the National Weather Service in Stage College, a winter weather advisory will remain in effect from 1 a.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Friday and covers Warren Mckean and Elk counties.
According to the NWS, “mixed precipitation” is expected. “Total snow accumulations of up to four inches and ice accumulations of up to two tenths of an inch” are projected.
Wind gusts could also reach 40 mph.
“The main message to take from this – travel is going to be hazardous tomorrow,” National Weather Service Meteorologist John Banghoff said Wednesday night during a briefing.
“A wintry mix will begin during the predawn hours and increase in intensity through Thursday morning,” according to the advisory. “The snow will be a wet, heavy snow…. Plan on slippery road conditions.”
Precipitation is expected to begin between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.
Banghoff said that is projected to start as freezing rain and “transition over to sleet and eventually snow.”
Total snow accumulation is projected at 2-3 inches in the western part of the county ranging to four to six inches in the southeast part of Warren County.
Banghoff said the system should be through the area by early Friday afternoon.
“It’s going to be impactful regardless,” he said.
PennDOT released a statement Wednesday cautioning against “unnecessary travel during the storm.”
In advance of the weather, vehicle restrictions have been implemented on I-79 from the turnpike to I-80 and I-80 from I-17 to exit 173 effective at 1 a.m. Thursday morning.
Those restrictions will prohibit some tractor trailer use from using the impacted roadways. Passenger vehicles will not be permitted to tow trailers and school and commercial buses will not be permitted.
Winter storm warnings are in place to the east while several counties to the south are under an ice storm warning where .25 to .5 inches of snow are possible.
