Numbers don’t support cheer, wrestling programs this winter

Each season, the school board gets a look at the number of students participating in athletics programs.

The snapshots for the winter sports were presented to the Personnel, Athletics, and Co-curricular Activities Committee on Monday.

“Numbers fluctuate from year to year and with so many options available to kids, they often have to make choices with what they want to be involved in,” Supervisor of Athletics and Co-curricular Activities Rick Gignac said.

The Warren County School District monitors programs that are close to or below the minimum participation limits. Those that are below the standards can be put on probation or canceled.

Over the years, a number of teams have dipped below the minimums. Some bounce back. Some are discontinued.

No programs were highlighted to show committee members that they were close to the line Monday, but there were a couple of programs conspicuous by their absences.

While the junior high wrestling programs at Eisenhower (12), Sheffield (13), and Youngsville (9) had healthy numbers of students after 10 days, there is no program at Beaty-Warren Middle School this year.

Officials were not surprised there — the writing had been on the wall.

“We saw wrestling coming over the past several years,” Director of Administrative Support Services Gary Weber said. “That is definitely not a surprise.”

“Cheerleading… not as much,” he said.

There is no varsity cheerleading team at Eisenhower High School and no junior high cheerleading team at Youngsville Middle School this year.

Starting at $3.50/week.
