Man sees 7 years in state prison for violent assault case

A Warren man will spend at least seven years in state prison from a violent April assault where he allegedly pushed a knife to the back of a woman’s throat and threatened to kill her.

Michael A. Peterson, 55, 10 Franklin St., was sentenced to 87 to 186 months in state prison on charges including two counts of aggravated assault and a single count of terroristic threats.

Officers, according to the affidavit of probable cause, were dispatched to a Pennsylvania Avenue West apartment “for a report of a female screaming for help.”

Police say they met with the victim, who made the call. They say her face “was covered in blood” and swelling was apparent in the area of her left eye in addition to bruises on her arms and hands.

The victim told police that Peterson, her ex-boyfriend, was “just at her apartment and beat her up.” She told police that he punched her several times “and pulled out a bunch of her hair” and “put a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her.”

She told police, per the affidavit, that Peterson also put a knife in her mouth “to the back of her throat” as well as to her stomach, threatening to stab her.

Police say they observed items in the residence that “had been thrown all over the place” and observed blood in several locations as well as the knives allegedly involved in the incident.

Online court records show that Peterson remains behind bars.

More specifically, he was sentenced to 63 months to 126 months incarceration on aggravated assault, 18 to 36 months incarceration on a second count of aggravated assault and six to 24 months incarceration on a count of terroristic threats.
