Home health nurse named winner of DAISY Award
Emily Colvin
A home health nurse at Warren General Hospital is the most recent winner of the hospital’s DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurse.
Registered nurse Emily Colvin is the hospital’s twelfth DAISY recipient.
The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day, according to a WGH release.
Colvin was nominated by a patient and the patient’s family.
“My husband had surgery recently at Warren General hospital and spent five days in the Critical Care Unit,” according to the nominating letter. “After his discharge, we were assigned Nurse Emily Colvin to make home visits. The very next day we heard from her to set up a schedule.”
“She was always prompt making her visit and was available by phone if we had an issue at any time,” the letter said. “Her manner is very caring and made my husband feel at ease.”
“She is thorough with her exams and very knowledgeable on any issues that we had,” according to the letter. “Emily was quick to contact the surgeon, our family doctor or any other department at Warren General Hospital to seek information or help solve any concern.”
“Emily was very helpful to me as a caregiver with excellent advice to help us move forward in recovery,” the letter said. “Emily’s experience and professionalism in the field of nursing is a great addition to your organization.”
Nurses may be nominated for the award by patients, families, and colleagues. Recipients are chosen from among the nominees by a committee at Warren General Hospital.
Awards are presented throughout the year at celebrations attended by the honoree’s colleagues, patients, and visitors.
Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him as an “Extraordinary Nurse.”
The certificate reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.”
Honorees also receive a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
WGH Chief Nursing Officer Joe Akif said, “We are proud to be among the healthcare organizations participating in The DAISY Award program. Nurses are heroes every day. It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly-valued, and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to do that.”
“Congratulations Emily Colvin RN, Warren General Hospital is honored to have an exceptional nurse like you, working here.”
