City panels to merge due to lack of members

Two city panels are set to merge due to ongoing lack of volunteers.

The city’s Parks & Recreation Commission and Street Landscape Committee are the entities in question.

Acting City Manager Mike Holtz said the Parks & Recreation Commission is down two members and just four are currently serving on the Street Landscape Committee.

The current commission is capped at seven members. Instead of removing members, he suggested letting two terms that expire at the end of the year not be reappointed.

The proposal has been discussed by both bodies in past meetings.

Council earlier this week approved an action to direct city staff to draft an ordinance that would formally make the change at the December meeting.

“So much of the great work done in the city,” Mayor Dave Wortman said, “is done by volunteers.”

He called this move “unfortunate” but encouraged residents “to continue to stay involved” with volunteer efforts that can “make the city better.”
