Arrest made in May gas station robbery

Times Observer file photo City of Warren police have arrested this individual, who was wanted in connection with a robbery at the Country Fair on Warren’s east side that occurred back in May.

City of Warren police have made an arrest stemming from a May robbery at the Country Fair on the city’s east side.

The name of the individual cannot be released because, while he is an adult now, he was a juvenile at the time of the arrest.

The incident occurred in May when the suspect entered the store at 413 Pennsylvania Ave. E, demanded money, obtained an undisclosed amount and fled the scene.

Investigators said he “portrayed to have a firearm” during the incident.

Detective Tiffany Post said that the individual was identified by witness statements from employees at the store who gave descriptions of his clothing but also path of travel, demeanor and voice.

Police then canvassed the surrounding neighborhood for information. “We looked at various cameras throughout the neighborhood,” Post said. “People always come forward with names.”

Captain Jeff Dougherty said that many of those name suggestions were “spot on.”

That investigation led investigators to the suspect, who Dougherty said is not a city resident.

Post said police interviewed the individual in front of his parents. She said he denied the conduct “but he placed himself there. He could give an exact description of what this person was wearing.

And what the individual was wearing stood out. At the time of the incident, he was wearing black or navy blue sweatpants around his head, a dark gray sweatshirt and light blue shorts.

He was also wearing one white sock, one black sock and no shoes. “His residence also had a security camera system,” Post said. “(We were) able to line up the times he was leaving and coming back.”

The delay between the incident and the arrest, she added, is the result of waiting for the return of evidence from the state police lab. “The detective’s office did an excellent job from beginning to end,” Dougherty said, “keeping their foot on the gas, following the leads, making an arrest. She did an excellent job.”

Post said the juvenile was charged with robbery and theft.
