79 black bears killed in Warren County

There were 79 black bears harvested in Warren County this year and 50 more in Forest County.

In all, hunters killed 2,841 black bears, with six taken in the early archery season, 1, 448 in combined season for archery, muzzleloader, and special firearms, 1,018 in the firearms season, and 369 in the extended season, according to a preliminary report from the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

The firearm season ran from Nov. 19 through 22.

The Game Commission sells about 200,000 black bear tags each year, according to a release.

Warren County was not in the top ten for most bears nor largest bears harvested.

The largest Pennsylvania bear of the year — a 755-pounder — and second largest — at 705 pounds — were both taken in Monroe County. The top 10 bears all weighed at least 632 pounds.

A total of 178 bears were taken in Tioga County. Lycoming County had the second most with 140.

Of the county’s bears, more were taken from Deerfield Township than any other municipality, according to the Game Commission.
