‘Great feeling’: Registration starts this month for Christmas toy drive

Christmas might be nearly three months away but Toys for Tots is starting to ramp up.

The first of two rounds of registration for those in need of gifts this season is set for Oct. 12-14.

Ryan and Amanda Wellner are the county’s Toys for Tots coordinators.

“There are no income guidelines,” they said. “The guidelines are children 16 years-of-age or younger, original Social Security cards for each child being signed up, with only one signup per child.”

They said that around 800 children are provided gifts each year.

Photo provided to the Times Observer Organizers with the county’s Toys for Tots effort highlight “incredible community support.” In past years, that’s included local law enforcement as part of No-Shave November, including, from left, Warren County Sheriff’s Deputy Rachael Canfield, Deputy Mark Lehnen, Youngsville Borough Police Chief Todd Mineweaser, and Conewango Township Police Officer Charlie Andersen.

The program is also only open to Warren County residents.

The registration is set for 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each of those days at the Marine Corps League Home, 2355 Jackson Ave., Warren.

A second registration round will be available Nov. 25 and 26.

“We have received incredible community support from both large and small businesses to individuals and families making direct monetary and/or toy donations,” the Wellners explained. “Toys for Tots is one of those programs that every person can support and get behind because we can all agree that children deserve to have Christmas memories and gifts under the tree.”

Toy pickup is scheduled for Dec. 3 and Dec. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Marine Corps League. Those picking up are asked to remain in their vehicles and to bring their pick-up slip.

The toy collection process will start later this month. Donation boxes will be visible around the county.

“We… have some great volunteers, but are always looking for more to help out,” they said. “Volunteers drop off donation boxes and pick up donations. They also pack the toy boxes for families and then assist distributing them on distribution days.”

And it’s those distribution days that make all the work worthwhile.

“Most of our families are thankful for not only the gifts they receive, but to the volunteers that help to make it happen,” the Wellners said. “We have seen tears on parents’ faces when we bring out a box of toys. It’s a great feeling.”
