State sentence stands in sex assault case

A Youngsville man who violated probation on sex offense charges will remain in state prison as a result of an order handed down Friday.

The hearing in the case against Nicholas Cox, 22, was on a motion to reconsider that sentence.

Cox was found to be guilty of probation violations and sentenced to 12 to 36 months in state prison back in July.

District Attorney Rob Greene said Cox wasn’t allowed to use the internet as part of his sentence

Hammond noted that Cox regularly smoked marijuana while on supervision and used the internet to search for teenage pornography, lying to probation when confronted.

He said Cox also missed several sexual offender treatment sessions, evidence that he had failed “miserably” while on a county sentence.

Cox was sentenced in 2019 on a count of statutory sexual assault, interference with custody of children and indecent assault in the wake of his relationship with a 14-year-old girl.

The sentence included one year in the county jail followed by several years of supervision. It also included 25 years of registration as a sexual offender.

At the original sentencing proceeding, Hammond said that it was his “perception” that Cox “would have a rough go of it in state prison.”
