County Commissioners support river clean-up effort

The Warren County Commissioners have chipped into the Allegheny River Clean-up.

During last week’s meeting, the board approved a $500 contribution to the effort as well as a proclamation highlighting the effort.

Commissioner Jeff Eggleston said the contribution is “something we’ve done in the past. It’s usually used pretty routinely for their restroom facilities.”

“They very much appreciate it,” he added. “It goes to a good cause.”

The proclamation highlights the event, set for Sept. 15-17, as well as the more than 3,000 volunteers that have pulled out 149,000 pounds of recyclable metal out of the river since the event’s inception.

That proclamation highlights some of the odd items removed — 55-gallon drums, lawn chairs, refrigerators and 1,600 tires.

Eggleston said he participates with his kids.

“It’s actually a lot of fun,” he said. “I really enjoy it. It’s a good excuse to get on the river.”

“And it benefits all of the people of the county,” Commissioner Tricia Durbin added. “Many, many people use that river in various ways. (It’s) always worthy to support the community as a whole in this type of effort.”

Acting as the county’s Board of Elections during a brief meeting held before the commissioner’s meeting, the panel formally approved moving the Clarendon Borough polling place across the street to the Allegheny Valley Veterans Center, where the borough office are now located.

Durbin said she attended the borough meeting where the change was discussed and noted that the only individual commenting on the change was “supportive.

“(It) passed with flying colors,” she said. “Everyone seems supportive.”
