Traffic delays expected as paving project kicks off

Times Observer photos by Brian Ferry Work began Monday on a 0.6-mile stretch of Route 6 centered on the south end of the Glade Bridge. Traffic will be delayed in all directions during milling and paving. The entire project is expected to be finished in September.

A paving project that will improve conditions along Route 6 near the Glade Bridge started Monday.

According to PennDOT, the work should be finished in September, weather permitting.

The project will cause traffic delays.

Traffic was down to one lane at a time and controlled by flaggers Monday afternoon and motorists should expect similar conditions throughout the milling and paving phases of the work.

IA Construction of Franklin began work on the 0.6-mile, $1.2 million job by milling the pavement from the intersection of routes 6 and 59 in Mead Township to the railroad tracks just west of the bridge. Supervisor Justin Cherry said the milling should be completed Tuesday.

The company will put down a one-half inch scratch coat of pavement later this week, Cherry said. After that, a subcontractor will work on the walkway ramp and curbs at the end of the bridge.

IA will return to complete paving following that work.

The project also includes the installation of new traffic signals, according to PennDOT.

Updated information on the project is available at www.penndot.gov/District1.

“PennDOT urges motorists to slow down when driving in work zones, and also to be alert to changing conditions, avoid distractions and to pay attention to signs and flaggers,” PennDOT said. “Drive responsibly in work zones for your safety and the safety of the workers.”
