The 42nd annual Allegheny Mountain Championship Rodeo kicked off to the thunder of hooves and applause Thursday night.

The rodeo, held at the Flying W Ranch in Kellettville, featured seven competitive events, entertainment with audience participation, and a calf scramble for the kids.

Each competitor gets one shot at their event. Winners are declared in each event after all three days of the rodeo, with overall event champions declared at the end.

The Kellettville event is a qualifier in the First Frontier Circuit (including Pennsylvania) of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

In addition to many competitors from within the First Frontier Circuit, on Thursday, there were bareback riders from Indiana, saddle bronc riders from Texas, steer wrestlers from Virginia, team ropers from Florida, saddle bronc riders and tie-down ropers from Texas, and a bull rider from Brazil.

The rodeo continued, starting at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. On Thursday, events wrapped up before 10 p.m.

Organizers were expecting larger crowds each night of the event.
