Rotary event to raise funds with race on river

Times Observer photos by Brian Ferry The Rotary Club of Warren will be holding a Duck Derby for the second year in a row, unleashing over 2,000 rubber ducks on the Allegheny River in a race aimed at raising funds for several organizations and initiatives.

A fundraiser for several local initiatives will dramatically raise the duck population on the Allegheny River in a couple weeks.

These yellow ducks will be part of the Rotary Club of Warren’s second edition of the Duck Derby. The event is set for June 25 starting at 11 a.m. at Breeze Point Park.

Rotary is holding the event along with the Chief Cornplanter Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Kathy Welch told the Times Observer that the club is selling tickets where “adopt a cut little rubber duck,” one of over 2,000 that will race down the river.

The event will benefit the Boy Scouts, scholarships, Leadership Camp of Students and the Lacy Park Multi-Sensory All-Inclusive Playground.

“The race will be accompanied by an event full of fun for the whole family,” Welch said. “Join us from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. for face painting, food trucks, music, and games.”

The race is set for 3 p.m. and prizes are up for grabs for the sponsors for the first four ducks to finish.

First prize is a kayak from Allegheny Outfitters; second is a gift certificate to Bent Run valued at over $100; third is a one-month indoor climbing pass for Goat Fort while fourth is a gift certificate to Penn Wilds valued at over $50.

Each duck can be adopted for $5 or a “quack pack” of six can be donated for $25. For those who want to upp their chances, 25 ducks can be adopted for $100.

Tickets are available at Stone Consulting on Second Avenue, White Cane Coffee at Third Avenue and Conewango, the service desk at Betts as well as from Rotarians or Boy Scouts.

They can also be secured online at https://bit.ly/DuckDerby2022.

“This event is about generosity and benefiting our community,” Welch said. “We hope you’ll adopt a whole flock and meet us at the derby.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
