Parks and Rec talks summer programs

Summer programs are ready to roll in the City of Warren.

The Parks and Recreation Commission heard about the status of those programs during a Tuesday afternoon meeting.

Department of Public Works Director Mike Holtz said training for the playground staff was held Tuesday.

The program opens next Monday.

The city had aimed to offer supervised playground time at three city parks but will only be facilitating the program at Beaty and Lacy.

“We have had a very difficult time finding anyone wanting to be a playground supervisor,” Holtz said, highlighting the marketing undertaken to fill the positions.

“We made a good, college try,” he said.

DPW Secretary Kassie Damcott said registration for the program is still available on the city website or in person at the playgrounds next week.

The CAR Pool opened for the season this week with limited hours until school lets out at the end of the week.

Holtz said the pool is up and running without any serious problems.

The Commission also heard about an effort to recruit new members to the group.

Commission chair Mike Suppa said he approached several daycare providers about the possibility of distributing a flier to the parents of children in those programs on the opportunity to serve.

“The committee right now is filled with people that are older,” Suppa said. “I would like to find somebody that has a 5, 8 or 10-year-old that actually uses the playgrounds currently.”
