Man sentenced on drug, firearm charges

A Warren man will spend at least the next seven years in prison on drug and firearm charges.

Christopher Cross, 39, 5 1/2 Dahl St. was sentenced by President Judge Maureen Skerda. He was charged back in February in the wake of a parole check that uncovered a tenth of a pound of marijuana as well as illegally owned firearms.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Cross agreed to speak with officers and allegedly detailed that he had 10 grams of methamphetamine in his safe. Police subsequently applied for a search warrant of the residence, two vehicles and an outbuilding.

Police detail finding two clear plastic bags with suspected methamphetamine weighing 9.6 grams, another weighing 19.9 grams, a ceramic skull containing 7.4 grams of methamphetamine as well as 18.8 grams of marijuana in a “brown Arby’s bag” all in an upstairs bedroom.

Officers say a rifle, handgun and ammunition were also discovered in the bedroom. Police allege that Cross “is a person not to possess a firearm” from a 2017 possession with intent to deliver conviction.

Cross told Skerda on Friday that he is tired of the fear and anxiety, staying in his room wishing he would die.

He admitted the struggles he has had outside prison, saying that he doesn’t ask for help.

Skerda told him that his letter to her was one of the best she’s read and encouraged him to make something of his life on the inside. She said she appreciated that he identified he is “tired of being tired.”

She then sentenced Cross to 33 to 66 months incarceration in state prison with credit for 98 days time served as well as $3,215 in fines and fees, submission of a DNA sample and priority for drug and alcohol treatment in the state prison system on a count of possession with intent to deliver.

He was also sentenced to 60 to 120 months on a count of possession of firearm prohibited.
